I am a relatively healthy 65-yr-old female ... overweight and have arthritis, but otherwise healthy ... no history of diabetes ... about a week and a half ago, my left foot just below my toes began to swell, then as the day went on, quickly turned red. I had a low-grade fever (below normal, which is often typical for me when I'm not feeling well) and felt out of sorts for days. I experienced a burning sensation in the bunion/big toe area ... my left leg and foot were warm to the touch. I believe I had an ingrown toenail, as well as a fungal infection in the toenail next to my big toe, as it appeared as if two nails were growing on that toe, one on top of the other, and the toenail was discolored. I had my toenails trimmed (by a podiatrist) who also wrapped my foot twice -- each time for 4 days, and told me to stay off it in case it was a stress fracture. I was able to walk, but due to the swelling had to get a surgical shoe as my regular shoes would not fit. The burning has stopped. The fever is gone. I've even had several good days this week, with little to no swelling and no redness. But if I'm on my feet in shoes for too long, the pain and/or swelling begins to come back. The doctor, the second time he saw me, said it must have been gout, but in checking the symptoms on WebMD, I don't buy that diagnosis. When my mother had her episodes with gout, she couldn't even get out of bed, much less walk on her foot. This is the first such episode for me. Any thoughts? Thank you!
