I'm concerned with my father's health to date as I first notice signs of an unexplained amount of weight loss. He is 81 yrs. of age and has always had a clean bill of health. He never had regular check-ups to any doctors because he just never had any real reason he felt was necessary to go, which we know is not good judgement. So in the month of July, my dad could not pass his urine and my mother called me to ask if I could carry him to the ER. Which is very unusual for dad because he has always carried on with no problems. So I immediately said yes I will and rushed to the house to get him and I asked do you want me to call 9-1-1 and he said no. So on our way to the hospital, I'm asking him all of these questions like do your chest hurt, do your back hurt, where are you hurtin at daddy?. All he said was if you get me to the hospital the doctor will help me go and I'm still like that's not really telling me a whole lot, so I just keep on driving him safely there. So finally we make it to the ER. Of course we had to wait over a 20min. mark and finally dad goes back in the ER and I'm trying to contact all of my siblings to let them know what has happened along with my mother who was left at home alone and was also waiting on a response. So when I did make it in the ER where he was, whatever they had to do to help him release, they had helped him release by inserting a Foley Catherer in his private area and when I entered the ER where he was I see a bag hanging on the side of the bed with clear and I mean clear urine dropping down in this catherer bag. My question is...was there any other alternative the ER could have used to see if he could release on his own, or was this the only approach to take. I was not back in the ER when they did this insertion of the Foley Catherer to ask if there was another alternative for my dad, because I was busily trying to contact my mom and my siblings to let them know what was going on. After my dad had laid there for bout 45-55mins. letting his urine drip in this bag, they released him to go home with this bag attached to him which was very difficult to maintain, because dad had to walk around holding this bag, because he messed the clip up on it. This happened on a Sunday. the 5th of July. On that following Monday, the homehlth nurse came out and removed the Foley Catherer and I had to rush dad right back to the ER again and the Foley Catherer was inserted a 2nd time. It scared me becuz daddy was not feeling good physically when this happened. When daddy came home from the very first time of having the foley catherer inserted there were days of seeing his urine turn different colors. 1 day it looked like the color of hawaiian punch and another day it looked like coke soda, then it started to clear back up. The homehlth nurse came out again and in between one of her visit he was scheduled to see a Urinologist who was about to retire and was trying to set his new clients up with other urinologist. So my dad met with him twice and now decides that he is going to set my dad up with another urinologist in another state. My dad had the foley catherer removed a third time and oh Boy!, this removal really frightened us because I had to end up calling 9-1-1 because mom said daddy was so weak and they rushed him back to the ER for a 3rd time and this time he now has a urinary tract infection which was not present before. After going through all of these dreadful moments of having his foley catherer in and out under a 30 day period, he now sees this new urinologist who says that he has to get a biopsy done. Now through all of this dad now has a birthday on the 16th of July and he is now 82yrs. old and has been told that he has an enlarged prostate. They have performed procedures on him with the very last of me knowing anything to date was a biopsy where he is awaiting results from it. I really am concerned with my dads health and just wanted to know whats the best choice of action we should follow through with a man his age and have been given these kind of diagnosis?.
