Is It Recommended To Have A Surgery For Calcification Of Arteries In An Elderly Person?

My husband has moderate to severe calcification of the arteries, probably genetic as he has lost his dad and 3 brothers to heart disease. He is 72. The cardiologist recommends surgery. Are there options to surgery such as medication, diet and exercise? At his age surgery may prolong his life but not the quality of life he enjoys now, i.e. golfing weekly, socializing with friends and family, etc.
