Is Surgery For Abdominal Protrusion Required Prior To Hernia Surgery?

Hi. I m a 66 yr. old woman who underwent a sigmod colectomy last Sept, (with a temporary colostomy) due to a ruptured diverticula and sepsis - and a reanastomosis surgery in late December of 2014. After the reattachment, I am left with a very large protruding belly. Now I am returning to have an incisional hernia repaired. The hernia is located at my navel. The surgeon tells me that to return my abdomen to its original flat condition, I will need to have a plastic surgeon perform additional surgery and that my abdominal protrusion is not due to the hernia. The protrusion extends approx 3 from my normal abdominal wall and is quite disfiguring. Is he correct, or is there more healing that can occur, permitting everything to fall back into my peritoneal cavity?
