My 78 year old dad has a health history of COPD, HTN, BPH, and Atrial Fibrillation. He has had 2-3 episodes of bronchitis yearly for the last several years which have responded well to antibiotics and steroids. About 8-12 weeks ago he developed cough, congestion, shortness of breath again worse than usual and despite 4 rounds of steroids and 2 rounds of antibiotics the cough and congestion have persisted. A chest x-ray earlier this week shows an area of density in his right lung without collapse. His MD has referred him to a pulmonologist and stated more antibiotics will not help. What are the possible diagnosis and tests needed to make an accurate diagnosis? Thank you.
