My aunt, 95, has a pacer for atrial fibrillation and also takes several meds--atorvostatin, clopidogrel, propafenone and spironolactone; however, she was prescribed Edecrin as a loop diuretic. She was recently increased froom 25 mg to 50 mg/day.
The internist has convinced my cousin that she can only take this drug due to the other meds she's on. The prescription is over $1200 a month, and cost-prohibitive.
Is there any reason, other than allergy which is not an issue, that another loop diuretic, like furosemide, could not be used in the alternative?
