My Husband Fell Off A Step Stool In His Woodworking

My husband fell off a step stool in his woodworking shop about 2 weeks ago. He landed hard on his left upper arm against a table saw counter. He is on LOVENOX for a blood clot in his right arm where he had a PICC line. His arm swelled with a huge hematoma. His pinky, ring finger and middle finger became numb. He went for X-rays two days later because the swelling got worse, and we thought he might have fractured his arm. The Dr said there was no fracture, but he bruised his muscle and because of the LOVENOX, it was extremely swollen and bruised pressing on the nerves causing numbness and that it should resolve itself in a couple of weeks.
The swelling has gone down quite a bit, the bruising is still quite evident, the middle finger and half of his ring finger are no longer numb. Now he is getting shooting pains some times down the outside of his lower arm and hand. Is it because the nerves are coming back in his hand and fingers?
Should we be using heat or ice at this point?
