Shaggy is a maine coon cat we adopted 2 years ago and his estimated age is 7. 3 weeks ago he stopped eating, became lethargic and barely drank. He was vomiting intermittently and up until this point, we had assumed it was hairballs. Our local vet kept him overnight, administered fluids, conducted tests (over $700 worth) and sent him home with a diagnosis of an inflamed pancreas brought on by an autoimmune disorder that would clear itself up in 95% of cases. Within 24 hours he was back at our vet again as his condition had worsened.
We traveled that same night to OSU veterinary clinic to see if they could help him at the suggestion of our vet who suspected cancer. A few tests were conducted that night and he was released to us (it was the weekend and a radiologist would not be in until Monday to read the results). The results showed it was unlikely to be cancer or any serious illness and we were sent home with essentially the same medication (after another few thousand in total expenses). We have been home a week and a half, and he has not eaten at all since we returned. While we were there he ate once. So in 3 weeks, that makes one meal. He weighed 16 pounds 2 weeks ago when we was being treated. He tries to drink, but generally sits by the bowls. He's maybe had a few sips in the last week. He throws up daily as if on a routine. Sometimes twice a day, but always violently. His choking sounds stir us from a couple rooms away. His vomit is yellow and foamy and not large in volume. He's recently, in the last few days, become unsteady on his feet. We called our local vet and OSU about 4 days ago and they recommended more of the same meds. They're still not working. Our vet refused to see him today before the long weekend.
He is literally wasting away in front of our eyes and we can't seem to get help or a diagnosis. This is our first cat. I've grown up with dogs and have a father and brother as MD's. I just can't imagine this kind of laid back attitude with a person or dog. Please help us! Shaggy needs any suggestions you can give!
