On a recent visit to my physician, he detected some blood upon performing a rectal exam; however, he said it was probably due to my having had a hemorrhoidectomy (1983) and a sphincterotomy (2000). In the past two weeks I have developed a problem with chronic constipation, and my diet of fresh berries; whole grains and fiber seem to offer no solution. Additionally, I purchased Metamucil, per the suggestion of my local pharmacist, and that afforded no significant relief as well. My dad s mother died of colon cancer, and I know she wouldn t be considered a first degree relative, but it still has me concerned. I have had polyps removed in the past and my last colonoscopy was several years ago, but I am remiss to remember when. What would you suggest I do to alleviate my condition and can you recommend any over the counter medication that might be more effective than Metamucil? Thank you sincerely, Ms. Ann Sikorski, D.O.B.: 03/09/1950.
