Suggest Treatment For Lumbar Back Pain Radiating Down Legs

I have been dealing with lumbar back pain for years, progressively getting worse. It now shoots down both of my legs radiating from back to side, along with a frequent stabbing pain in my thigh. It is truly enabling me to have a normal active life. I had been seeing a pain specialist and have had several injections with no help. I'm seeing a new Md and he ordered an MRI. After his MRI Review I received a msg from his office stating he wants me to have an xray. I'm so confused, I have always understood the MRI to be more definitive. I know you can't tell me why he has asked for this, but I'm asking for your opinion. Can you think of any reason at all an xray will benefit my diagnosis? Thanks, I truly appreciate it. (Of course their office is closed)
