What Causes Heavy Vaginal Bleeding Along With Clots During Menstruation?

I am 23 year old, last month I suffered from profuse bleeding, lots of clots is seeing at the time of discharge, I had irregular bleeding for 20 days before that also although there is no date of my period at that time and at the time of monthly cycle, lots of clots is being seeing. my doctor suggested me to take 21 days of regestrone for two time a day, will it harm, by body or health??
