What Causes Pain In My Left Ankle?

i have started to have pain in my left ankle all of a sudden. it came on about a week and a half ago and it has not stopped hurting. It has even gotten so bad that it is hard for me to walk on it. When going up or down stairs and have to put all wait on that one foot it feels as tho I could fall down. it is a constant pain, my foot is cold, swollen and i can barely move my toes. i have not had any injuries to my foot. I do have a very bad back, but i am not assuming it has anything to do with that. when i sit at my desk at work i have to take off my shoe or it hurts a little bit more. when i cross my bad leg over my other leg it feels so cold, like it is in a freezer, and it throbs in pain. i stepped on something sideways last nite on that foot and it felt like it was going to break right off my leg. i walk with a limp it is so bad. the weird thing is that before all this, i heard a popping sound in that foot everytime i took a step. i thought it was weird. but then this pain came on. please help me with any ideas as to what is going on.

thanks,

Amanda
