What Causes Red And Irritated Cyst On Scalp?

Hi, I think I have an infected cyst on my scalp. I tried to pop it yesterday with a needle and squeeze it, nothing came out. This morning I woke up with a 50 cent piece size knot, it's swollen, severely tender and red and irritated. I've iced and heat neither helps, should I go to the er?
