What Causes Sudden Swelling Of Toes,foot And Face?

I have experienced sudden swelling in my toes and ball of my foot that last for an hour once every 3-4 months. I just experienced my face swelling up for 3 hours. Went to the doctor and was given a shot and steroids for 5 days. Can you tell why this may be happening.
