What Does Scant Menstrual Bleeding Indicate?

I am 46 years old, I been having regular period for the last 20 years every 28-30 days lasting no more than 6 days, for the couple of months i have experience a change in my period it comes on time, blood is kind of dark I bleed for less than a day then stops, after a day or two I start spotting again, this lasting for more than a week, is this change the beginning of the menopause?
