When I Extend My Left Arm (e.g., To Pick Up

When I extend my left arm (e.g., to pick up something from the floor), I get a sharp pain in my left index finger which leaves the tip of my finger numb. Therefore, I avoid the extended reach, but the numbness remains. Sometime it is more proniunced that at other times, but has remained numb for over a week Thoughts?
