YOu can certainly try. My brother in law has been hospitalized for 4 weeks. The doctors cannot say what is wrong. He started with tremors in his left hand and a rapid heart rate of 160. His mental status was normal, fully functioning computer programmer. He is a medical mess which doesn't help. He has a-fib, insulin dependent Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, problems with circulation in his left ankle/leg. In 2 days he declined to not being able to stand or walk, very agitated, slurring his words, hallucinating, and severe altered mental status. They cannot control his rapid heart rate with any medication. Just when they think he's improving (like this morning: he was talking clearly, could answer simple sentences correctly, didn't know what month it was, but can read the clock and the closed caption on the TV with his glasses on, and did very well in PT, although not strong enough to do much), he then declines in the evening to a tremoring, slurring mess that can't even sit up or touch his face to scratch his nose. They thought initially it was alcohol withdrawal. And it's still on the table, but it's been 4 weeks. His rapid heart rate has been controlled and they were talking of moving him to rehab, but tonight he was back up to rapid heart rate and unable to speak and doesn't know where he is at all. It's very discouraging.
