Hi My Cat Is About 1 And A Half And

hi my cat is about 1 and a half and is having difficulty breathing. hes always sounded like he snores a little bit but for the past week hes had coughing fits and today he is breathing really hard and sounds like he is wheezing. I took him in the bathroom with the hot shower running hoping to help with his congestion if thats it but the more things I read online the more confused I am, and unfortunately no vets are open today. Do you have an idea of what this could be? And if I should go get him a feline medicine for coughing and wheezing that I can get at any pet store?
