My 12 Year Old And I Have Been Fighting A

my 12 year old and I have been fighting a severe cough along with a fever that jumps around from 99.2-102 degrees. I also have extreme fatigue after exerting my self just a little. We've been at this a week for me and going into second week for my daughter. Took daughter to doctor yesterday and they didn't even run any tests just prescribed her antibiotic along with a host of over the counter things like Mucinex, steroidal nose spray, Motrin, couple other things even allergy med. First off I've read that antibiotics don't really help with these type of illness, Second is there not a test they should have done before assuming "its bacterial"?
Our coughs started out very phlegmy could feel and hear it in chest too. Also had lots of sinus congestion and drainage. Our coughs are a little dryer now, mine is more persistent sometimes go into a bad coughing fit.
I guess I'm looking for a second opinion on what we have and how it should be handled. I personally think we just need rest and time but its been a week and school and work don't like that prescription, although I have been using home remedy like honey, lemon water, liquids, steam and others.
