Who is a Nutritionist/Dietitian?
A nutritionist is the health professional who inspects and evaluate the dietary habits of individuals and further guide them to eat a balanced diet according to various principles of nutrition. There is a slight difference between ‘dietetics’ and ‘nutrition’:
Dietetics focuses on food management and can plan an adequate diet menu for you, whereas a nutrition specialist focuses on the promotion of health through eating healthy food.
After graduating a three-year-course in B.Sc/B.A. Nutrition, it is prerequisite for a Nutritionist to qualify a license/registration from a school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE), in order to practice as a clinical dietitian.
However, a Dietitian holds a bachelors and/or Masters/PG diploma degree in Food & Dietetics (in which nutrition can be an added subject.). Dietitians can practice independent or work at places like nursing homes, schools, prisons, community health programs, and home health care agencies.
*Nutritionists cannot call themselves as “dietitians”, however, all dietitians can call themselves as “dietitian-nutritionist”.
