Question:
Hi Doctor, My kids, who are aged 5 and 3 were bitten by dog. I started their anti-rabies vaccination. They received the first 2 dosages. Unfortunately, when the time for the third dose came, there was a shortage of vaccine and they missed their 3rd dose. Now, I want to restart their vaccination schedule from dose 0. Is it okay? Please suggest.
Brief Answer:
Kindly mention vaccination dates received
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
For a more clear picture, kindly mention the date of bite, and dates on which fist two doses were taken. This will help us to guide you in a better way
Thank you

Date of bite is 6 Nov First dose 7 November Second dose 10 November Third dose was supposed to be given on 14 November but didn't happen. Can I restart the vaccination schedule from 0?
Brief Answer:
Not needed if first 3 doses are completed by 10th day
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
If first 3 doses are completed in 10 days, a 1-2 days delay will not interfere with immunity build up. If 3rd dose can not be taken with in 10 days from beginning, immunity may be compromised and may need additional doses.
In our case, vaccination was started on 7th November. So we have to complete 3rd dose by 17th November. If this is not feasible, kindly discuss with your doctor regarding the same.

Hi, The vaccine will come only today, 18 Nov. So, I was thinking to restart the vaccination schedule from dose 1. Is it okay? I mean I want to stick to the schedule and give vaccination on time. So, is it okay to start the vaccination from dose 1?
Brief Answer:
No need to restart the entire schedule
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome back.
As we could not complete the first 3 doses in 10 days as mentioned, a minor modification of the schedule might be needed.
We need not restart the entire schedule. Rather, we may need to give 1 or 2 additional doses in the end.
As per latest guideline from CDC(centres for disease control and prevention) and WHO(world health organisation), if first 3 doses are not completed in 10 days from the 1st dose, immunity may be incomplete, and they recommends additional dose at the end, but not to restart the entire schedule. The exact number and timing of additional dose is decided on case to case basis after assessing the risk factors(like present health status of the bitten animal, area and depth of the wound, and rapidity of cleaning the wound). There is no clear cut guideline regarding this. The treating doctor decides this on an individual basis. Your doctor might be discussing this in details.
Hope I have cleared your doubt.
