most commonly due to trauma
Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic
Lesions to the top of the are usually related to trauma to the roof of the mouth or infection with trauma being more likely of the two.
Trauma from food eg if abrasive or drink (eg hot beverage).
In most cases, the lesions heal within a week though as you state, it can be painful during that time.
In addition to avoiding the use of foods/drinks that may worsen the injury (use soft foods for a few days, cool or cold liquids), the use of the antiseptic would also aid healing eg the betadine or you can use a combined agent such as chloroseptic (contains antiseptic and pain reliever)
Use of oral anti inflammatory pain killers would also help as well eg ibuprofen, cataflam, naproxen
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
