Question: 2 years sober now drinking 6 drinks of vodka 4 days in a row, then 2, the none, drank almost every day last week til Friday with 1 or two days off. can i take 100mg of gabapentin and 5mg of alprazolam causing i'm feeling anxious. I want this done but I can't tell any of my family. I just want to know if these two will cause serious side effects. I know you won't recommend it but I didn't have serious withdrawals before the 2 years sober but I also had alprazolam and I only have 5 left. please just answer if these two in the lowest dosage will interact.

Brief Answer:
Alprazolam and gabapentin can be safely taken together- further explanations below
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

Alprazolam and gabapentin can be taken safely together as long as you use them according to the recommendations (do not exceed therapeutic doses).
These two drugs can also be taken safely with paroxetine (as you are on paroxetine at the moment).

As you already mentioned, there is a recognized high risk of dependence while using benzodiazepines (alprazolam) regularly. Also, alcohol may increase the sedation effect of alprazolam which in some cases can be very severe (life-threatening), so you should not take alprazolam and alcohol together.

To conclude:
- alprazolam and gabapentin can safely be used together (just do not exceed the therapeutic doses)
- it is important to know that alprazolam may cause dependence and addiction in case it is used daily- this can be a problem equivalent to alcohol addiction in some cases so care should be exercised when choosing it to treat alcohol withdrawal
- if you take alcohol and alprazolam at the same day you risk serious complications due to sedation
- overall, it is best to discuss the options with a doctor and have the one that is most appropriate for you (the doctor will be able to decide on this based on history and examination). This will also allow for regular monitoring of the desirable and undesirable effects and proper adjustments in treatment.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
