8 Month Old Daughter Has A Lump Right Underneath Her

default
Posted on Sat, 15 Aug 2020
Question: 8 month old daughter has a lump right underneath her left nipple. No discharge, pain, or redness. First felt tiny lump around 2/3 months. But lump has grown in size. Just had an ultrasound today. Won’t get results until tommorow. Just wanted some insight on what this could be while we wait for results.

-lump feels movable. If I stretch her nipple a bit it feels as if the lump moves with it.

- She had a chest X-ray 2 weeks ago. Is a chest X-ray capable of showing a breast mass?

-I know breastbuds can happen in infants, but not usually at 8 months old so I am very concerned. My daughter is half breastfed/ half formula.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I understand your concern

But here there is nothing much to worry.

What is the approximate size? Is the margins clearly defined or vague?

It is common for infants to have some asymmetry of breasts among two sides. This is usually from disparity in amount of subcutaneous fat underneath. After initial 2 months, breast bud develops by 7-8 years only. So this is unlikely to be true breast bud.

In short, if it is just a vague lumpy feeling which is soft in consistency, we need not worry. True swellings of concern are extremely rare in infancy, will be more firm/hard to touch, will not be XXXXXXX will feel like a definite swelling underneath(as no much glandular tissue in infants) rather than vague lumpy feeling, and there can be associated disfigurement of overlying skin or lymph node enlargement.

Ultrasound is the best modality, and I expect a normal report or some fatty tissue only. X ray is not of much help in this age group.

Stay relaxed. I will be happy if you let me know the ultrasound report.
Take care

Thank you for your response doctor. The lump feels defined, hard and not movable unless I pull up the nipple in which case the lump comes with it. But I just received the Results and it seems to be Normal. Do you have any other recommendations besides the 6 month follow up. And things we should watch out for along with the actual size of the area? I copied/pasted the results below.

BREAST ULTRASOUND LEFT COMPLETE
HISTORY: N63 Palpable Lump
COMPARISON: None

Sonographic evaluation of the left breast in its entirety, was performed, including each
of the four quadrants and the retroareolar region, in clockwise fashion. The ultrasound
was performed without direct physician involvement and the static images were submitted
for review.

LEFT BREAST:
No cystic or solid lesion is identified. No abnormal acoustical shadowing is apparent.
Retroareolar, corresponding to palpable lump, subcentimeter prominent glandular tissue for
the patient's age.

IMPRESSION:

Prominent glandular tissue for patient's age in the retroareolar region corresponding to
palpable lump.

RECOMMENDATION: Six month follow up left breast ultrasound recommended.

Brief Answer:
Nothing extra needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

Thank you for getting back with the report.

As expected, the report is normal only. The report says, glandular tissue beneath areola is a little prominent than expected for her age. This just indicates a physiological variation, and need not be taken as significant.

So the lump you are feeling is normal glandular tissue of breast only, hence feeling hard and attached to nipple. Apart from the 6 months follow up, nothing else needed. Just keep an eye on its size and any changes of overlying skin. Avoid frequent purposeful palpation, as this will predispose to inflammation or infection there.
