9 Month Old Son (dob 6/26/19) Has A Rectal Temp
Question: 9 month old son (dob 6/26/19) has a rectal temp of 102 f and is approaching 48 hours of fever. Originally noticed that he felt warm the evening of 4/5/20 around 8pm. Took his temperature for the first time morning of 4/6/20 around 730am and recorded around 100.1 f forehead and axillary. He had one episode of vomitting last night. Around 4 or 5 substantive heaves and seemed to clear everything in his system. Has been able to breastfeed, eat small amounts of food and drink water today without vomitting. Called 24/7 nurse line through provider yesterday and today and was advised today to download and use this app for a possible virtual evaluation. I have not administered any prescription or otc medication. No prior medical conditions or hospital admittance. No known allergies.
Brief Answer:
Possibly a viral infection
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.
I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. Often such viral infections manifest with fever. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated.
If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol or acetaminophen (P-100, Crocin or Tylenol) to it bring down. Also use tepid sponging.
Regards
