In old age, Generally bowel movements are sluggish not because of gastrintestinal reasons but because of slow brain processing.
So old age persons are common sufferer of constipation and sometimes very difficult to treat.
Enema is the best therapy for getting regular bowel movements. Now multiple options are available for this problem.
You should tell him to proper amount of water daily with fibrous diet. If sluggish bowelmovements are present then you should opt for Bisacodyl suppository as it will increase bowel movements.
You should also consult with physician/ Gastro-physician.
You should also go for thyroid profile, serum electrolytes, blood sugar and colonoscopy if possilble at this age.
