A Specialist (and Expert One At That) On This Website

Question: A specialist (and expert one at that) on this website already told me to dismiss these fears but I keep having what I believe to be continued symptoms:

First perceived risk: I engaged in unprotected insertive oral sex with a man of unknown status. My only act of sexual activity in many months. There was no visible blood of any kind and my penis did not have any open sores. I was flaccid throughout and the whole abortive ordeal lasted 90 seconds. No ejaculatory release took place. 25 days later I get a random bout of cellulitis on my right thumb. I was then placed on antibiotics. I decided to get a 4th generation p24 antigen/antibody test at 28 days that came back negative. While the advisor told me he cannot say this is conclusive as per adherence to the standard testing time window...the incredibly low risk activity and negative 4th generation test at 4 weeks was an overwhelming sign that I am free and clear.

Second perceived risk: The specialist at the free testing clinic then handed me his waste bin to dispose of the finger prick wipe I used to stop the mild bleeding. It had the gloves he wore, paperwork, and I'm nearly certain other (albeit concealed) testing equipment from prior tests. It may have had other finger prick wipes from previous tests as well. My hand with the finger prick (though no longer bleeding) lightly grazed contents for a second by accident though I did not see what it came into contact with. There was no visible blood on my hand/finger whatsoever and while he apologized for the anxiety this may have caused me...he assured me (and I have the email exchange between us) that even in the event that I had touched anything tainted the fragility of the virus alone after what must have been 35-45 minutes to an hour that had gone by between tests would not be a potential means of transmission exposure. He said that he takes all possible precautions including wiping stuff down with bleach in between tests to protect patients as well as himself. He said that these phobias of mine should be reassured that "casual contact with the trash in open air" is not a means of transmission.

A few days later I developed a sore throat solely on the left side of my throat and had bloody boogers coming out of my left nostril. I recently moved to a state with high altitude after years of living at sea level with frequent weather changes, am prone to sinus allergies, and was taking Bactrim for cellulitis. I attributed it to these factors and it went away in 4-5 days.

A few days later (about 12 days after the first test), after a night of resuming drinking and smoking a bit of tobacco off of the antibiotics: I developed a bad case of congestion, sore throat, headache, mild folliculitis on my chest (though not particularly rare for me), mild fever (temperature oscillating between 98.3-99.7 F for about 3-4 days; as of the last 5 days it has stayed between 97.3-98.7 F throughout the day), and ear pain when swallowing.

I am prone to sinus infections but what has persisted mostly after 9 days is the throat and ear pain when swallowing, congestion (with on/off bloody boogers and yellow mucus), and cough. No sneezing, fever, rash, or body aches to speak of.

I thought I'd experienced intermittent night sweats after waking up with a bit of sweat on my pillow/behind my neck on 2-3 occasions but each time I wake up my clothes/sheets as well as the rest of my body are completely dry otherwise. No fever to speak of. I do tend to sleep with clothes shielding my eyes from the sun and I do arch my neck a lot...could this cause the mild sweating that only effects these areas of the body?

I know I'm probably freaking out over nothing but is are any if these symptoms cause for alarm? Could grazing the waste bin at the HIV clinic have really been another potential exposure? Should I get another test at 8 or 12 weeks?

Best regards

I might be downplaying the amount of sweat on the back of my head/neck. It's noticeably wet on my pillow at times. Still, the rest of my clothes and sheets are not drenched by any means. My legs and chest completely dry. Lower back possibly perspiring mildly but not enough to dampen my shirt.

I also drink alcohol fairly often and I have taken xanax at times to help me sleep (though not mixing the two together). Could this add to the sweating?

This has happened to me before the perceived risks transpired. It just seems to be happening more frequently. Could it be anxiety as well?

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms are not related to HIV infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM
Thanks for posting your query.
Your Nonreactive HIV 4th generation test 28 days after is highly reliable as far as HIV 1 is concerned. More than 99% of HIV infections are through HIV 1 only.
HIV infection through handling some type of trash is negligible as per CDC, XXXXXXX (https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/risk/estimates/riskbehaviors.html)
All your symptoms are unlikely to be due to HIV infection Not to worry.
There is nothing wrong to have another 4th generation test 4 weeks after the handling of trash to rule out this negligible risk
