Abdominal USG Showed Enlarged Liver And Cortical Cyst, Kidney Has Cortical Cyst. Worried About Kidney Cyst
Question: My father is 53 year old. Recently he had done Ultra-sonography of whole abdomen. In his report it is written that:
My father is 53 year old. Recently he had done Ultra-sonography of whole abdomen. In his report it is written that:
1. Liver: Liver is marginally enlarged, showing heterogenous parenchymal echopattern. Intra hepatic biliary channels are not dilated. Left lobe shows a cortical cyst of diameter 2.4 cm. (Liver span at mid clavicular line is 12.4 cm.)
2. Kidney: Both kidneys are normal in shape, size & outline. Renal parenchyma & central echocomplex of both kidneys are normal except left kidney shows a cortical cyst of diameter 2.4 cm
Right kidney measures : 9 cm
Left kidney measures: 9.5 cm
Ureters are not dilated
3. Urinary Bladder: It is normal in shape. Walls are smooth and regular. Lumen is clear. Post voiding sonogram shows approx 120 ml. of residual urine.
4. Prostate Gland: Prostate gland shows heterogeneous echotexture with regular margin.
It measures : 3.7*3.7*3.1 cm
Approx prostate weight 22.5 grams.
So, we are very much tensed for this type of report. Is there any big problem in his report? Mainly we are fearing for cyst in left kidney. So is there any point to be worry about that? Is it curable or have to do surgery? One vital question which comes to our mind is it a symptom for kidney failure or any type of cancer?

Hello,
Thanks for the question.
Kidney cysts are quiet common and you should not worry about it.This doesn't need any treatment. You can follow it up on repeat sonography.
Even prostate findings are normal for his age.But this needs treatment, so consider seeing a urologist.
Only the thing which one can worry about this report is heterogeneous appearance of liver. So consider undertaking liver function tests.
Hope this answers your question.Regards.

Thank you doctor for your kind reply. He had also done his liver function test and his SGPT is 46. For All the other details I am uploading the reports also.
Hello,
Raised SGPT might indicate underlying medical condition, but is not specific for any particular cause. It might be just a temporary issue. But this needs to be confirmed on repeat testing.
In your father's case this raised levels cannot be ignored as there is pedal edema as well.
I think you need to keep close watch on his liver function tests. And if they remain raised then possibility of altered liver function would be likely.
One more investigation which can be undertaken in his case is color Doppler of leg veins.Sometimes venous insufficiency can be the underlying cause of such leg swelling.
Hope this answers your question.
