About A Month Ago I Had An Ongoing Fever (100-102)
Question: About a month ago I had an ongoing fever (100-102) that lasted two weeks. After a week I visited my Dr. He said I had no other symptoms and probably was viral, he did a chest x-ray to rule out walking pneumonia and a urinalysis (Both were normal). The fever went away on it's own, however now I am worried about some weight loss. I've lost 7 lbs in the past three weeks, and almost 10 in the past month. However, in the past month I have drastically changed my eating habits. I have changed from eating largely take-out and fast food for breakfast and lunch to packing my lunch from home, overall I have a calorie change of about 1,000 less per day. I was also drinking an average of 3 alcoholic drinks (whisky) per day, and I am now having less than 3 per week. I have increased my water intake by at least 4x, and cut my coffee intake in half. Also I went from sleeping 5-6 hours per night, to sleeping at least 7-8. I have been doing all of these things for the past 4 weeks. Would these changes account for a weight loss of 7-10lbs over a month? or should I be concerned about cancer (given the past fever) or something more serious?
I took my weight again and now I'm showing a 6 lb. drop over 3 weeks.
Brief Answer:
Hyperthyroidism or diabetes can be possible.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
You have changed your diet reducing calories, selecting healthy foods, reducing alcohol intake and increasing water intake and this can be enough to change your weight reducing it.
The fever you had may be related to infection, autoimmune disease or even cancer. The fact that it stopped it is a good fact that it has less possibilities of being cancer.
You should get further evaluated doing a total blood count with formula, biochemical blood balance, T3, T4 and TSH levels, fasting glucose levels, HbA1c.
Hyperthyroidism and diabetes can cause weight loss. Also you may need to do an abdominal ultrasound.
Just loosing weight and fever isn't enough reason to think about cancer.
Hope I have answered the question.
