About One Week Ago I Started Having A Cough ,

default
Posted on Fri, 11 Dec 2020
Question: About one week ago I started having a cough, congestion, sore throat, horesness and sneezing. It actually only lasted for a day or two, except for the cough which I is still lingering - I have the urge to clear my throat frequently. Now, for the past two days, there is swelling above my right eye, and my face is sore on my ride side (cheekbone, eyes, jaw). I also have an on and off headache right where the swelling is. Do I have a sinus infection even though I no longer have congestion issues?

Brief Answer:
Does not seem like sinusitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using "Ask a doctor" service.

I read your question and I saw the photo.

From your description, I do not think that the tenderness and the redness in your eye and face is because of a sinusitis. It looks more like an inflammation of the tissues in the palpebra and around it.

I would say apply some ice on it (not directly on the skin, but wrapped with a towel).
Take Ibuprofen 400mg every 6 hours. This will help fight the inflammation.
If worse or not better, especially if you start having fever, and if the red area expands, consider seeing a local doctor. You will need to take antibiotics in this case.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Thank you for your response. I will try ice and ibuprofen as you suggested. Do you know what can cause inflammation in this area? Could it be related to an infection? It is not painful at all and no longer red. The redness went away overnight. However the lump is still there. I’m not sure if that information helps.

Also when I first noticed the bump, it occurred a few hours after a headache I had on the exact area. I put ice on that area to relive headache pain. I put it directly on my skin without a barrier. Could that cause inflammation?

Brief Answer:
Please provide some more information

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the follow up question.

If there is no pain and no redness then there is no inflammation. Maybe the redness in the photo was caused by the ice. That information is helpful and changes a lot my evaluation.

I cannot see the lump/bump in the photo. Is it possible to upload a photo which is more clear?

I don't think the lump is related with the headache. I still am sure and think it is not related with a sinus infection. More it can be a small cyst under the eye palpebra. But again I need as much information as possible related with the eye- when did you notice for the first time the lump? Not painful at all? Does it more when you move the eye? Does it move when you go over it, under the skin?

The more information you give me, that you think is more relevant, better I will be able to advise properly.

Looking forward to your follow up question.

Dr. Papaqako

I noticed it Wednesday morning after I woke up from a nap. I had a headache in the morning so put ice directly on it along with meds, after 20 minutes of on and off ice I took a 2 hour nap. Shortly after my nap, my boyfriend pointed out that my head had a lump and was red. I thought it was odd because it was red/swollen in the exact area I had a headache and applied ice directly on my skin. It stayed red until the next morning as when I woke up Thursday it was no longer red, just a small lump. It is hard to attach a clear photo as the lump is very mild. In the original photo the red area is slightly raised on my skin. Currently, it is about 3 cm wide and 2 cm long, though not too noticeable unless looking closely. When I woke up today (friday), it appears a tiny pink but nothing like in the photo I attached earlier. It is hard, it feels like bone. It also does not move. When I move my eyes, I do feel some pressure around my right eye especially when looking up. My eye itself is not swollen, but it feels that when when looking up. I hope that information helps, thank you.

Brief Answer:
Tenderness and swelling from ice which has damaged tissues

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for all the information.

I think because you have put ice directly on the skin you have bruised/ice burned the skin and that is why it is tender and a bit swollen.

I would still stay on my first advice. Use Ibuprofen. Drink plenty of water. Only if the area is inflamed, red or hot then use Ice but not directly on the skin.
If worse or not better consider seeing a local doctor.

Kind regards,
Dr. Papaqako
