Question: Actually I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism in April after 3months of no periods .Due to lockdown I have used 25mg medicine for a month.Later one doctor advised to change diet and not to use the tablet for two months to check if it will be in control as I'm very young. So I have stopped using medicines and changed a life style and food habits.Again in July end I got the test done.I couldn't consult the doctor due to covid. My thyroid level in April-6.47(first time),June-1.84(used medicine),Aug-4.74(without medicine). But I have irregular periods and above all the bleeding is very high.SHould I use the thyroxin medicine or can I continue without medicine with food changes and lifestyle changes.Regarding periods what I should do?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for sharing your health concern with us.

I have gone through your query and would like to offer some information.

Firstly, the cause of the irregular periods should be detected after a proper evaluation. Though hypothyroidism can cause irregular periods, it is not the only cause.

Secondly, have you noticed any improvement in your cycles during treatment with thyroxine? If so, then you should continue the medication.

Your TSH levels have improved but, since you are in the high normal range, I would suggest continuing the medication in the lowest dose of 12.5 micrograms until you are able to get proper evaluation.

For management of irregular periods, evaluation is necessary. Hormone replacement can be planned if needed. Maintenance of a proper weight, regular exercise and a healthy diet are necessary.

Hope you find this information helpful. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

regards,
Shanti.V.
