Question: Age 62 male, I had a complete medical check including ECG and Echocardiogram from a top cardiologist (Scottsddale AZ) because I get white coast hypertension and it scares me. The results wee excellent acccording to the Cardiologist, no left vetricle thickness, enlargement, no blockages, no sign of any valve problems, etc. She said I should continue the 50 MG Losartan I was prescribed to try to solve this white coat hypertension issue as it can't hurt and come back in a year for a lipid panel to check for potassium levels, etc. What has me scares again, is I read notes on patient portal and Echo tech showed all normal but said Stage 1 Diastolic Dysfunction and, as a life long athlete, height 6 ft, weight 157, I never previously had had blood pressure.. My BP now, even in doctors office tend to be 127/77 range. The cardiologist said everything was normal, I can continue to do my high intensity exercise (running, sprinting, swimming, biking). At age 62 I score in the 85th to 100 th percentile for all tests on latest XXXXXXX Institute tables. I do tend to sufffer form anxiety, and hypochondria. I called nurses at my cardiologist and they said what your doctor told you is more important than notes from tech on the patient portal. Cardiologist also said that I have the athlete's heart ECG due to early polarization pattern and results of echo/. Resting pulse is around 55. No other meds except occasional Xanax 1 mg for anxiety. I did have a motobike accident 3 years ago where I broke my left forearm and had Grade 1 lacerations of kidney and spleet but totally healed. I don't want to be scared about the Stage 1 diastolic dysfuntion stage note. What do you think ? Thank you doctor, G

Hello!

Welcome on - Ask a Doctor - service!

I passed carefully through your medical history and would like to explain that everything seems to be OK and you should not worry about anything.

Your cardiac structure function is normal and what has worried you: 'stage I diastolic dysfunction', is not a rare echo finding in normal healthy adults.

It is not a XXXXXXX that if you repeat the echo again, another day, it will not be present, because this pattern may be influenced by the loading conditions and the circulation status (instantaneous heart rate, blood pressure during examination, circulating blood volume).

The fact there is no myocardial hypertrophy or heart chamber dilation makes the above echo finding clinically irrelevant.

So, there is nothing to worry about!

I would just encourage you to follow a healthy lifestyle (healthy diet, regular physical activity).

Hope to have been helpful!

Wishing all the best,
