Am I Allergic To The Lidocaine Or Am I Just Weird?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Oct 2024
Question: Bad reaction to a cortisone shot in my hip, nausea, diarrhea, overall feeling very ill for 6 days. Did help the pain. Am supposed to have an epidural for my back shortly and am concerned that I will have the same experience. Am I allergic to the Lidocaine or am I just weird? My doctor has never heard of this reaction.

Brief Answer:
Most likely not due to cortisone shot

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If this was the first time you had this kind of reaction to steroids, I would suspect it was not related to the shot, and was more likely a viral illness ("stomach bug") that happened to be at the same time or around the time of your shot. It is uncommon for cortisone shots to have any systemic effects, and if they do, it wouldn't be expected to cause nausea or diarrhea. So especially if you have previously used steroids (such as for an allergic reaction) and didn't have any problems, I would suspect this is not related to the cortisone shot, and I would suggest going ahead with the epidural and wouldn't expect there to be any problems. However, if you have had this reaction before with cortisone shots, then that could indicate there is some kind of reaction to the cortisone, though that would be very unusual.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
thanks.
