Am I Pregnant Inspite Of Having Delay Periods Followed By An Unprotected Sex?

Posted on Wed, 2 Apr 2014
Question: Hi Dr. XXXXXXX I had unprotected sex with my GF the day before yesterday and her period cycle was due yesterday on 13 March. There's been a days delay and we are worried if I may have got her pregnant. I'm confident I did not ejaculate inside her. In fact, I ejaculated outside only. She is worried whether I pre-came inside, which I don't think so. We're considering taking the iPill to be on the safe side. Can you advise if we should wait for her period to come through or just take the iPill. She is 23 and is worried about the side effects of the iPill. We really appreciate your advise Dr. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer: Pregnancy not likely. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for trusting us with your health concern. Having an unprotected sex just a day before the expected periods is least likely to cause a pregnancy. The delay in periods could be due to a stress also. There is no need to take an I-pill after ore than 48 hours. Pre-ejaculatory (or pre-cum) fluid does have sperm in it but is a very, very minimal amount. Technically speaking pre-ejaculate does not actually contain sperm in it, but can pick up leftover sperm from the man's urethra from previous ejaculations. The chances are extremely low that your girl friend will get pregnant from pre-ejaculate. Furthermore the fact that it was the last day of her cycle further reduces the risk to negligible. But, this does not mean there is no chance a woman can get pregnant from pre-ejaculate so never practice unprotected intercourse in future. Using a condom can also protect you from sexually transmitted infections. So better be safe than sorry. As of now it doesn't seem likely, but if she misses her period do get a urine pregnancy test done. Nothing needs to be done now. Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have. Wishing you good health. Regards. Dr. Rakhi Tayal. Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX appreciate your answer. I want to clarify the last cycle date was 10 Feb 2014 and we had unprotected sex on 10th and 11th March. We also just remembered we had unprotected sex on 16 Feb for a very short time and I was no where close to coming. My girl friend fears pre-cum on this occasion too. After 16 Feb, we had sex only on 10 & 11 March this week and her period hasn't come through yet. She's very stressed because of all this.

Brief Answer: Chances of pregnancy are less than 1%. Detailed Answer: Hello. Thanks for writing again. The precum on 16th Feb can also cause a pregnancy. But the chances are less than 1%. She can wait till 15th march and if there is no bleeding then do test her urine for pregnancy. Hope my answer is helpful. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish you good health. Regards

Thanks again Doctor XXXXXXX for your reply. She just got a urine test done and it shows negative. Is this conclusive of being negative for the recent two times we had intercourse on 10th and 11th March. Or only for the time on 16th February as mentioned earlier. If not, should she have an iPill since it has been exactly 48 hours. Pl advice urgently. We have also gotten a blood test done , results will be out by 9pm. Thank you.

Brief Answer: It is too early to get a positive test. Detailed Answer: It is right now too early to get a positive test for pregnancy for the act you had on 11th march. A blood test can detect pregnancy only for 16th Feb episode. Taking I-pill can cause a withdrawal bleeding and can delay her periods further. She can take the pill if she is too disturbed. The chances of pregnancy are low. Regards.
