Any Cosmetic Treatment To Remove Yellowness Of Teeth Without Losing Teeth Through Crown?
Question: Hi,
I had a root canal for one of my teeths a couple of years ago.But with years the teeth has become yellowish and the doctor tried to decolour the teeth using some medicine absorbed in cotton implanted inside the teeth but that did not help.I want to know if there is any cosmetic treatment to remove the yellowness of the teeth without losing my teeth throug crown.My teeth is strong enough so i don't want to implant a crown.Can you please suggest any treatment like painting etc which can make it white again?.I had a friend who had this bleaching done on RC tooth but i lost touch with him.Can you also suggest where in bangalore i can have the treatment and how much will it cost?

First, what your dentist did with your root canal treated tooth is called XXXXXXX bleaching/whitening, which works in 60-70%cases. As the tooth has discoloured after root canal treatment, the stains/yellow colour is XXXXXXX which cannot be treated completely by paint on / external tooth whitening.
Ideally, a root canal treated tooth is secured with a cap/crown by preparing/creating space around the tooth for the placement of the crown. This crown (metal free) apart from covering the discolouration also keeps the tooth from fracturing in future.
If you feel that your tooth can survive without the crown then you may undergo following steps of treatment:
-Tooth whitening to reduce the yellow discolouration
-Placement of an opaquer to mask the colour disparity (If deemed necessary by your dentist)
-Laminate/veneer (Emax), of a certain thickness to mask the yellow discoloration.
The usage of the laminate as well as its thickness will be determined by your dentist depending on the intensity of discoloration, your occlusion/bite, and condition of the discoloured tooth as well as general health of the surrounding gums.
Any dentist who specialises in aesthetic/cosmetic dentistry will be able to help you out. The pricing of a metal free crown or laminate may vary approximately between Rs.0000-0000 INR depending on the clinic you visit.

Rates for whitening (Full mouth)vary from clinic to clinic, though approximately 8-0000/- (In office tooth whitening). Individual tooth whitening will be decided by your dentist. Opaquer cost mostly will be included in the laminate cost.
For whitening, a chemical is placed on top of the tooth which bleaches it resulting in whitened teeth.
For laminate placement, ideally the facial surface of the tooth is prepared ie: around 1mm of tooth(enamel) is removed on which ceramic laminate is placed.
