Are Glucosamine And Chondroitin Safe In Diabetics?
Question: My father has diabetes but also having joint pain and undergoing orthopedic treatment, some one has suggested to have Glucosamine 1 tab a day. How do you recommend to have this tab considering diabetes in consideration.
Brief Answer:
Its safe in diabetes
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Research has shown that glucosamine and chondroitin in usual oral doses are safe in diabetes. You can check this review of literature:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC0000/
However some studies have indicated that there may be some hyperglycemia (raised blood sugar), raised BP and raised lipids in diabetes.
My recommendation is that if your father is taking these tablets, then there should be regular monitoring of fasting blood sugar and BP.
Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

would you also suggest dosage , how many tabelat a day ?
Brief Answer:
Mixed results
Detailed Answer:
Hi again
The doses range from 500 mg to 1,500 mg of glucosamine and 800 mg to 1,200 mg of chondroitin daily in 2-4 divided doses.
Since glucosamine and chondroitin may not be effective in everyone and sometimes can have side effects, I suggest that he starts with 1 tablet a day and take it for 1 week. If there is improvement of pain and no side effects, then dose can be adjusted as per the pain. It can also be taken as and when needed.
If there is no benefit of pain relief, it is better to discontinue it.
Hope it helps.
