Are OC Pills Effective At Treating PMDD?
Question: Hi. I was prescribed birth control two months ago. After changing my dose to 20% estrogen instead of 60 the previous months I feel much better overall. Yet, I'm about to finish my active pills Thursday and get my "period" Friday. I figured being on the pill would help with my horrible PMS symptoms because I'm pretty sure I lean toward PMDD but honestly I feel the same if not worse. I feel like I still have all the symptoms. How is this possible if I'm on these hormones?
Brief Answer:
OC pills not required
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Oc pills are not the treatment for your PMDD but just support maintaining regularity in your cycles.
If you have been in OC pills for contraception alone then its fine, but if for hormonal treatment for PMDD, I feel it is not apt. Please discuss in detail with your physician. You need not be on OC pills.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

It's not. I'm just wondering why I'm still getting all the PMS symptoms when I'm not actually ovulating? Shouldn't my PMS symptoms not exist then?
Brief Answer:
A fixed amount of Progesterone
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The OC pills are known to release a fixed amount of progesterone in the second half of the cycle, but these can be altered by daily stressors of like which could be social physical emotional, psychological and even work-related.
So the average released progesterone by the pill tends to remain inadequate for the day and one may experience PMS symptoms, but not as severe as earlier.
Hope I have answered your query.
Take care
