Are Prednisone, A Nasal Decongestant, Xyzal And A Nasal Spray Good For Decongesting A Sinus Infection?
Question: Hi. My nose is swollen from a sinus infection and I have been taking prednisone, nasal decongestant, allergy pill (xyzal), and nasal spray. Is it good that I am decongesting. They might do a ct scan. What will be the next step will they drain it out?thanks

The treatment you are having is good to reduce the swelling (congestion) in the nose and sinuses. If there is sinus infection considered also especially if it is a bacterial infection that the doctor might have suspected probably antibiotics might be needed also. An antibiotic like Co-Amoxyclav(eg. Augmentin) is the first line of treatment (if you are not allergic to penicillin).
Generally, the doctor does a rhinoscopy which is an examination of the nostrils with a light to visualize the inner surfaces and this should give enough information on the nose problems. CT scan is considered if structural problems like nasal septum deviation are suspected so that the doctor can understand if there is deviation present and if so how much it is. After they read the CT scan, if they find structural problems (like septum deviation) they will decide on the need for surgery and what kind of surgery.
To conclude I would say:
- CT scan is done in some patients if the doctor suspects structural problems like nasal septum deviation or other ones and after the results are available the doctor will decide on the further needed steps
- Rhinoscopy (examination of the nose with a light) and your history is most of the time enough for examining the nose and diagnosing sinusitis.
