Are Blood Transfusions Possible Between O And AB+ Blood Groups?
Question: If a person with type O blood type were given an AB+ transfusion what can happen? I am 82 years old and had a hip operation July 15. Therapy has gone well but I have now developed a rash on my body and feel intense heat inside my body. My primary Doctor as well as a Dermatologist are treating it with Cortisone. It is helping but I am continuing to break out with the itchy rash and both Doctors do not know what it is causing the rash. Blood test and urine test are good and it is not staph nor an infection. Am just curious about the possibility of the transfusion looking for some kind of answers. Thank you

Person with O blood group will not have any antigen A and B. But he will have antibodies against both A and B antigens.
Person with AB blood group will have both A and B antigens.
So when AB + blood is given to O blood group patient, donor's antigens (Aand B) will react with antibodies present in recipient 's blood.
This will definitely cause mismatch reaction.
So if you are having O blood group and you have received AB +then possibility of transfusion reaction is more.
So discuss about this possibility with your dermatologist.

The operation was July 15th, I developed the terrible rash in early October about 10 weeks after. My dermatologist said that if I were to have a reaction it would have happened right away or much sooner. Does a persons blood type change as she or he gets older?
