Are Brittle Bones A Side Effect Of Prilosec?
Question: My husband has been on prilosec for 15 years. He is trying to get off of it because he read it can cause brittle bones. He was taking i/2 pill for the last 6 months. Now he has been off it entirely for a week. He feels sick and has acid stomach and burps a lot. He takes gavascon when its bad and it seems to help. He is ready to give up. Can you give us an estimate of how long it will take before he feels better?
Brief Answer:
He can take zantac
Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Thanks for using HCM.
Yes long term use of prilosec can cause brittle bones in elderly persons.
If weaning off from prilosec is causing recurrence of symptoms, then he can take zantac for control of symptoms. Zantac does not cause brittle bones.
He can start taking zantac and stop taking prilosec.
He can take zantac for 4-8 weeks and then stop it.
I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
