Are Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis And Fatigue Symptoms Of Lupus?
Question: I am a retired nurse so I don't want sugar coating your answers, please. I was diagnosed finally with Fibromyalgia. It's been getting more AND more severe, almost incapacitating, along with my arthritis I'm just a few weeks away from my surgery for a hip replacement. I finally looked up Lupus and I think I have 95% of the symptoms. I want to know the progression of Lupus when you get to the stage of being somewhat incapacitated and onward. Please. XXXXXX

My computer wiped out so you may get 2 answers. I was dx 10 yrs ago with arthritis and fibromyalgia. I has rapidly progressed. I am needing a walker and at times have trouble. lifting my leg into bathtub for shower. Forget tub cant bend knees to get down or up. Had knee replacement @ 5 yrs ago but it doesn't work well. Having severe pain hands centered n index and thumb pad, low back all the way across back, hips and knees. Also have neck pain, shoulders, elbows, ankles and muscle pains in upper arms, hands and legs. No longer able to drive because of hip and knees and hands.
Hip replacement this coming June; severe pain, Xray showed bone against bone and a few spurs. Maybe waited too long? But had OR last yr. and almost died BP 68/48 and 4 Units of blood, lost 60 lbs.(I weigh 185 now so wt loss wasn't bad). Wasn't able to et for 4 months and the surgery was a simple Hiatal Hernia repair. Still have all the symptoms that I had prior to Repair.
For the last 5-10 yrs I've had extreme fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, feeling like I'm burning up and chills. pleurisy feellings sensitivity to sunlight, severe hair loss which has let up for now.
My pains go in cycles of severe to mild with them lasting for a few days to a week or longer and I can hardly get to the bathroom much less outside. I've also been dx. with osteoarthritis, severe restless leg symptoms. I have memory problems, cognitive impairment along with others and then it was exacerbated by a fall and hitting my head a couple times on cement.
Hope this gives you some background that you can work with? Sincerely, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Lupus is unlikely
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back.
So you have osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia - both are not well treated
there is no clinical features of lupus, so donot think that you have lupus.
You have fatigue, aches, sensitivity to light and hair fall - these are very nonspecific, not fit into the diagnosis of lupus. But still you can go for ANA test to confirm it. this is a good initial test, but nonspecific. Even if you detected as lupus, it is very mild in you case, as your kidney, heart etc. vital organs are not involved.
With all of the features, you described, I think that you have Osteoarthritis, which is a wear and tear disease, physiotherapy is the answer.
Second , which I understand is, fibromyalgia, is a very complex disease, you can discuss with your physician about various treatment modalities like exercise, drugs like amytriptyline, milnacipran etc.
Regards,
