Are Flu, Lethargy And Slurred Speech Symptoms Of Brain Tumor?
Question: I have a real concern regarding my 3 year old grandson. He appeared to have the flu and has been very lethargic. He started to lose his balance and his speech is a little slurred. The doctor did a physical and could not determine the cause. He did not have an ear infection. The doctor said his actions could be a result of an infection. My concern is that his symptoms reflect a brain tumor. Please advise.
Brief Answer:
MRI of brain
Detailed Answer:
Hi
General symptoms of brain tumour are headaches, fits, vomiting, slurred speech and loss of balance.
Since your 3 year old grandson is having symptoms of slurred speech and loss of balance and is not having ear infection i would advise you to do a MRI scan of the brain.

Dr DE, he does not have headaches, but slurred speech and loss of balance, he does have. Could dehydration have any effects? He has had a bad case of diarrehia.
Brief Answer:
dehydration can have such effects
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Since he is not having headache and fits i do not think he has brain tumour.
Yes, Diarrhea leading to dehydration causing loss of body fluids and salts, can lead to loss of balance and slurred speech.
I would advise you to give him oral rehydration salt therapy (if dehydration not resolved already).
You can mix 1 packet of ors powder in 1 litre of boiled water. Dissolve the contents and after the solution cools down give him sips of it throughout the day.
Once his dehydration resolves his symptoms will automatically go away.
Brain tumor is unlikely in his case.
