Are Frequent Postoperative Follow-ups With The Surgeons And Regular Physiotherapy Essential For A Diabetic Patient Advised To Undergo A Knee Replacement Surgery?
we visited for consulting doctor for My Moms Knee pain and they mentioned that Knee replacement is the only option since it cant be cure by medications.
My mother is having diabetes from past 12 years so wanted to check if it causes any complications if we got for knee replacement and what can be done in order to avoid complications in diabetes patients Pre and post Surgery.
If we do knee replacement whether frequent follow ups with the surgeons and Physio Therapy sessions are required post Surgery?
Also could please Suggest some good Surgeons and hospitals in XXXXXXX for knee replacement.
Diabetes needs to be controlled first.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
In advanced osteoarthritis when all the medical treatments fail then surgical knee replacement is the only option. Since your mother is a diabetic her cardiac status needs a detailed evaluation to check if she can withstand the stress of surgery or not.
The complications pre and post surgery are not much if your mother's blood sugar levels are properly controlled and she is not obese.
People with diabetes face a significantly higher risk of postsurgical complications such as wound infection, stroke, deep vein thrombosis (blood clot), fracture around the implant, and joint loosening, particularly when their diabetes isn’t well controlled.
She will need regular pre and postoperative to follow-ups and regular physiotherapy for an early recovery. You need to follow the advice of her orthopedician strictly, try to lose some extra weight prior to surgery and get her blood glucose levels well controlled to avoid the complications.
In XXXXXXX for knee replacement, you can consult Dr XXXXXXX JV on XXXX.
I hope this answers your query.
Wishing you good health.
