Are Heavy And Prolonged Periods Normal After Child Birth?
Question: I am 8 weeks postpartum with my first baby. I'm on my first period and it is very heavy. I had a normal vaginal delivery with no tears. Yesterday I was having to change a large pad about every hour or so. It would drip in the toilet as well. Also when I'd get up I could feel some come out. I had heavier periods before getting pregnant, but not like this one. I know they can be heavier after giving birth, just more then what I expected. No cramps really. I feel like it's slowed down a bit so far today, but haven't been up long. I've felt a bit lightheaded, but I'm also a huge worry wart and may be over thinking it. Is this normal?
Brief Answer:
Preferably get an ultrasound done
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
i have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Heavy and prolonged periods are normal when you get them first time after childbirth.
However, changing of pad every one hours seems a lot heavy periods and you should get examined by your OBGYN specialist and get a ultrasound done to see any pathology in the uterus like fibroid.
In the meantime, you can take tranexemic acid tablets to decrease the flow of bleeding.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.

Even with it slowing down quite a bit today and having the one day yesterday of heavy bleeding? I'm having anxiety about it. I can call my OBGYN tomorrow morning and ask. I've got myself all scared. I take medicine for anxiety, so I'm prone to freaking myself out. I could go to the express clinic today, but don't know if that's necessary.
Brief Answer:
No need to panic
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, if the blood flow has slowed down, then you need not worry and panic. It is then likely to be normal.
You can consult your OBGYN tomorrow for further management.
