Are Hives Post Intake Of Eliquis Signs Of Japanese Virus?
Question: My wife recently starting taking Eliquis a month ago for an upper leg blood clot. She has hives after taking it. Yesterday our GP diagnosed it as "Japanese Virus". After looking up "Japanese Virus", I have concluded that the GP's diagnosis is way off base. Also she has stopped taking 5000 mg of vitamin D3 and 81 mg of aspirin which the literature says may interact. Your opinin, please.

The hives started immediately upon taking Eliquis. She is still taking the drug.
No other symptoms are present.
We have not traveled to Asia.

Sorry for the late reply due to my XXXXXXX clinical work.
The presence of hives when taking a medication is indicating that the patient is allergic to that particular drug. Usually, we recommend to stop that med and substitute with other alternatives.
I am surprised your her doctor did not stop that drug. I advise to consult with an allergy specialist and dermatologist. I am sure they will revise her case and advise to change therapy.
There are other anticoagulants that can be used instead (e.g. Xarelto).
Can discuss this further with her doctor.
