Are Internal Hernias Rare?
Question: Hello
I have qestion about - internal hernias
As it is rare or small that dont cause any problems !
Internal hernias are rare. They are found in 0.2% to 0.9% of autopsies, but a substantial proportion of these remain asymptomatic.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/internal-hernia
But i understand ufter colon cancer surgery asymptomatic internal hernias are common
IH was noted to be much higher in the postoperative CT scans occurring in 22 of 105 (21%) patients.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/0000/
So as i understand internal hernias are common after colon cancer or bariatric surgery
But they are very rare after other bowel surgery like Appendicitis
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/0000/
and other abdomenal surgery
Thank you very much

Brief Answer:
Please go through detailed answer.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Hello and thank you for query,
Hernia simply means bulging of internal organ into a space.
As any major surgery in abdomen would loosen the muscles etc hence chances of herniation are common.
In appendicitis through a direct incision we reach the appendix and cut it off so chances of herniation post any major surgery are much more then any small surgery like appendicetomy etc.
Things mentioned in link are true.
Thanks
