Are Nausea, Fatigue And Weakness Symptoms Of HIV?
Question: Hello Doctor. I am a male who had unprotected sex with another male one month ago. He assures me he is neg, but I am worried. He did not ejaculate inside me, but there may have been precum. Four days later, I began experiencing severe heartburn and upset stomach. This has pretty much continued for the last month along with slight nausea, fatigue, general weakness, and headaches. I know it's early, but last Saturday I did an oraquick test and the result was negative (thus ruling out any earlier slip ups on my part). No fever, rash, swollen nodes, or mouth sores. But the other symptoms along with loss of appetite and concerning. I know they say hiv is hard to contract, but I am scared. Went to a doc who concluded that I was experiencing GERD / reflux disease. I have had stomach problems in the past and have hypothyroidism, but this has become somewhat dibilitating. Thoughts?
Brief Answer:
Your thoughts are the main worries!
Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.
You are so worried about HIV and this is certainly why you have symptoms of gastritis. Gastritis is directly related to stress and unless you walk pass this disturbing thought, am afraid you would continue not to feel well. Your test is negative and should serve as reassurance that all is well. Forget that you are HIV exposed and that you probably contracted any infection. When you resolve these disturbing thoughts, then all is good for you.
In all, you are HIV negative despite the exposure. Your test has reminded you of that. For now, put it behind you and live a better live.

So...just to make sure, the oraquick test taken 4 weeks later is reassuring? Will test at 6 and 12 weeks again, but you are saying this initial test should give me confidence, right?
Also, other than calming down is there anything else I can do to treat the gastritis?
