Question: Hello, I am on the antibiotic Azithromycin. I started the antibiotic yesterday with no adverse side effects and I took my second dose this morning as well as two Advil and immediately became really sick. I became severely nauseous, was vomiting and was sweating profusely. I felt like I was going to faint. I had taken a Alka-Seltzer cold earlier this morning, and I know there are no drug interactions between ibuprofen and Azithromycin. Could this have been an allergic reaction to the antibiotic or possibly just a reaction from the multiple medications in my system? I had no reaction the first day when taking the antibiotic.

Hello,

Nausea and vomiting are common side effects of ibuprofen. Almost half of patients taking ibuprofen experience nausea and half of them may be vomiting. Sweating commonly accompanies nausea and vomiting. Nausea is common with azithromycin as well, although not as common as with ibuprofen. 1 in 3 patients may become nauseous with azithromycin.

Therefore I believe that the most likely cause is an anticipated side effect of either ibuprofen or azithromycin.
