Are Open Hernia Repair Incisions All Done In The Same Location Of The Groin?

Question: I am going to have an open right inguinal hernia repair next month. It was detected on ultrasound. I do not have a not bulge. It is a small hernia. My question is, are open hernia repair incisions all done in the same location of the groin? If so, where is the location of the incision?

Hello,

* Open hernia surgery incision is called inguinal incision, which is common
for almost all hernia repair except some cases ( where there is irreducible
hernia and bowel might force surgeon to divert the incision location ).

* Inguinal incision is oblique incision extending from area above and lateral
to pubic symphysis bone, going outward and upward in direction of the
inguinal canal ( usually it is around 5-6 cms ).

So it is below the waistline and 5 to 6 centimeter long. Will bowel movements be difficult after surgery and will the size of the hernia make any difference in the pain level after

Hi,

* Yes it is totally below waist line and usually 5-6 cm long.
* In general, surgeons prefer to give oral laxative syrup after surgery for
some days to have soft bowel movements, so do not worry for that.

* As there is no bulge outside in your case, there will not be significant pain
after surgery.
If large hernias operated where there was extensive tissue dissection,
then obviously the level of pain would be much higher than simple case.
and consultant requires higher doses of pain killer medicines.

Thank you for your informative answer. I had varicocele surgery 28 years ago. The incision was significant and it was right at the waist line. when I say below the waistline, I mean below where my belt is. Is the incision smaller for this hernia repair than the variococele and less painful than that surgery which was about 2 weeks recovery.

Hi,

* The incision of hernia repair usually is bigger than varicocele which
requires around 3-4 cm incision.
If it was bigger than that in your case, there may be certain reasons for
the same.
* So far as pain is concerned, now with the advent of latest surgical
techniques, anesthesia and analgesic tablets ; I recommend not to get
much stressed out for that, you would be fine within 10-15 days.
