Are Polyps In Stomach And Duodenum Cancerous?

default
Posted on Wed, 20 Jul 2016
Question: Hi, I know of someone, an 82 year old woman who has been told after an endoscopy that they found nodules in her stomach and duodenum. They are being biopsied. No blood in the stool or anaemia but occasional gastric pain. She was going in for a procedure to open up her esophagus but this was found to be fine so they did not do it. But they found these polyps. What are the chances of these being cancerous as opposed to benign?

Brief Answer:
Hello dear. Chances are low

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. I have gone through the details.

The polyps can be seen sometimes in an upper endoscopy and are usually benign. They may be associated with H. Pylori infection also. However, if the polyps are large in size(>1 cm) or multiple, they may be malignant.

They require biopsy. So almost all polyps require biopsy to rule out malignancy
The exact incidence is difficult to predict and it depends on the type of polyp.

However, most are asymptomatic and benign. Hope this'll solve your query, let me know if you have any further queries..

Thanks and regards
